Engaging the mass
Mother Tongue Language Fortnight
Mother Tongue Language Fortnight aims to cultivate students’ interest in the learning of Mother Tongue language through interesting cultural activities. These activities allow students to experience the unique cultural elements and create opportunities that encourage students to use Mother Language in the activities.
Enabling budding learners
Mother Tongue Support Programme( MTSP)
MTSP was introduced to all primary schools in 2017. It is a customised programme to support pupils in the learning of Mother Tongue Language (MTL) in Primary 3 and 4.
The key features include:
● Smaller class size during curriculum time or after school
● Focus on building a stronger foundation in their oracy and literacy skills
● Acquisition of key content and skills in a fun manner
● Immersive language environment to enable students to learn MTL with confidence and joy.
● Taught by specially trained Mother Tongue Language teachers.
Enriching the learning experiences
BICEP
In 2020, Qihua Primary had collaborated with Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan(HKHK) to launch the BiCEP. Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan has been offering the 3-year BiCEP for selected students from Primary 4 to Primary 6 in all its 5 affiliated primary schools since 2007. BiCEP is designed by a team of experienced Chinese Language teachers, in consultation with relevant experts. . The programme aims to develop a core group of effective bilinguals; with a strong emphasis on empowering the participants to discover their Asian heritage and to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture and values.

The programme includes four components namely:
a. Children’s Literature Appreciation and Creative Writing (儿童文学赏析与创作)
b. A Recapitulation of Chinese Culture and History (中华文化)
c. Chinese Oratorical Skill Training (口语训练)
d. Overseas Immersion Programme (for P5 level only) (五年级海外浸濡)
Thumbs Up
The Chinese Department collaborates with SPH to conduct a new reading programme using ‘Thumbs Up Junior’, a Chinese student publication produced by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) for lower primary students.
Volunteers from SPH will conduct the one-hour reading session on a weekly basis.
This programme aims to stretch students beyond school curriculum:
● Read extensively
● Develop interests in CL
● Exposure to current affairs, broaden their horizons.
